Tour of the Village of Yesteryear-- Experience life at the turn of the 20th Century. Village features 20 historic structures including the Dunnell House an 1868 mansion built by Mark Hill Dunnell
12:45 PM – Lunch at the History Center (or possibly Torreys at their new location Downtown Owatonna) Menu and details to follow.
1:45 PM – Board bus to go to the Downtown
2:00PM - Split group in half.
Group 1: Enjoy time in Historic Downtown Owatonna. An Owatonna Ambassador will be present to answer any questions you may have.
Group 2: Tour the Louis H. Sullivan’s National Farmers Bank
2:15 PM - Group 1 Historic Downtown District
Enjoy a walk through Historic Downtown perusing a variety local stores, including a gourmet bakery, a women’s clothing boutique, 2 candy shops (Costa’s & Curly Girlz) that boast handmade treats, a local coffee shop, and home décor shops. A complete list of stores in the Downtown Shopping District can be found in the Owatonna Visitor Guide. Visitor Guide and brochures on stops will be sent via mail.
2:15 PM - Group 2 Guided Tour National Farmers’ Bank
The National Farmers’ Bank is a premier example of Prairie School Architecture and was named one of the 11 Can’t-Miss Stops on a Tour of America’s Hidden Architecture Gems. The bank was designed in the early 1900s by Louis Sullivan, who became known as the father of the skyscraper and a mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright. The National Farmers’ Bank became the first, and most famous of Louis Sullivan’s jewel box banks. The building features gold leaf arches, stained glass windows, ornate terra cotta, and two-ton electroliers. Now an operating Wells Fargo, the bank is located in Historic Downtown Owatonna.
