HomeTown Credit Union - A business that gives back
For 46 years, HomeTown Credit Union has been a staple of customer service and financial education in our communities. From its humble beginning in the basement of the Owatonna Tool Company, HomeTown Credit Union has grown to support over 19,000 members throughout the counties of Dodge, Rice, Steele, and Waseca.
Each year, HomeTown Credit Union joins other Credit Unions in the state with a day of giving and service called “CU Forward Day”. Last year’s event focused on giving back to employees of schools and food shelves as these were two areas in need of support amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. On October 12th, 2020, HomeTown Credit Union closed all branches to give employees a chance to write letters of encouragement to teachers and deliver homemade snacks at a social distance. Charitable donations were also made to food shelves in Owatonna, Faribault, and Northfield.
HomeTown Credit Union prides itself on supporting financial literacy campaigns within the communities they serve. Recently HomeTown embarked on web based lunch and learn initiatives and online webinars called, “Ask HomeTown,” which provide information for adults on financial topics such as budgeting and saving, managing credit scores and reports, the basics of getting a loan, understanding credit cards, fraud safety and more. This commitment to a more financially literate community has won HomeTown Credit Union the 2020 Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award. The award, sponsored by the Minnesota Credit Union Network and the Credit Union National Association, recognizes leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of adult financial literacy.
